Chapter 11: Kaycee
It took my mom half an hour to say a single word once we were in the SUV being driven back to Calabasas. Actually, it was two words. She sniffed the air and said: "That's disgusting."
"What?" I asked, looking out the darkened window at all the people on the sidewalk, in their cars, living their lives.
"I can smell him on you, Kaycee. I can smell...it. The first thing you need to do when we get home is take a shower."
I didn't bother asking what 'it' was, although I had some idea. And it was the first thing I did when we got back. I stripped off all my dirty clothes, stepped into the shower and waited until the warm water was running down my face before allowing myself to cry. I didn't know what was going to happen yet, but I knew it was going to be bad. I didn't have any experience with defying my parents or my management team, but I sensed they weren't going to relinquish any control without putting up a fight.
Mostly, though, I just missed Jack. I missed him viscerally, like an animal separated from its mate. There was no thought or rationalization, just an aching pain in my body and my mind, a pitiful incompleteness. I didn't feel brave any longer, not without him beside me. And what had he meant, that we would see each other again? When? How often? Why hadn't I pressed him for details?
Lisa, my hairstylist, was waiting in my dressing room when I got out of the shower and trudged in to try and find something comfortable to wear.
"Hey Kaycee!"
"Hi." I said, sighing internally.
"Your mom called, she said your hair needed dealing with. Why don't you have a seat and we'll see what we can do?"
"OK."
I slumped down on the overstuffed white leather bench in front of the ornate, gilded mirror and Lisa took the towel I had wrapped around my hair off, sucking air in through her teeth when she saw what she had to deal with.
"Oh wow, Kaycee!" She exclaimed at the tangled blonde mess. "What did you do?!"
"I just went away to my house in Malibu for a, for a..." I said, not managing to finish the sentence before my breath hitched childishly and I started to sob again. Lisa immediately put her arms around me, rubbing my shoulders and comforting me.
"It's OK, Kaycee. It's OK. You just let it all out if you need to. Don't be embarrassed. We all have days like this, don't we?"
It was so nice. It was just so nice to be supported—I'd half-expected her to be snappy with me, like I knew everyone else was going to be. When she wasn't, I felt overwhelmingly grateful for the simple human concern Lisa offered. I lay my head on her shoulder and bawled, shivering and gasping and wiping my nose while she held me.
"It's alright," she said, when my breathing started to slow down again, "we don't have to do this now if you don't want.
